One of the biggest questions we get asked is first why we do this and next is how do I get started. Let me answer the first of these from my prospective as a active reenactor.
I got interested in reenacting over 10 years ago when I became active in a historical group called the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV). The SCV does not do reenacting and I wanted something more active to portray my interest in the history of the Civil War period. Thus I found reenacting. Now due to family, work, etc. I wasn't able to become active in the reenactment community until about 2 years ago. I had checked out several groups both over the web and in person while attending reenactments. I joined the 12th Texas based upon the recommendation of a friend. With the 12th Texas I found a group that was extremely open and friendly, the atmosphere is extremely family friendly (in fact some of the reenactor's currently with the 12th started as children and now reenact as adults). The group welcomes newcomers and does everything they can to make them welcome.
Now as for the second question "How do I get started?". It is easy sign our guest book. Click on the e-mail me button and I will contact you personally to talk over the hobby. Our come to one of our events. Everyone there will welcome you and be willing to talk about our great hobby. Your will be expected over time to acquire your uniforms (Confederate and Union), weapons, etc. You do not have to get everything in one shot it can be acquired over time. We have sutlers (suppliers) we can recommend to purchase your equipment or you can make your own uniforms (assuming you can sew unlike me). Just remember this is hobby and a way to show how our ancestors lived during the Civil War, we have fun but we also try to educate people about the realities of the period. Every reenactment has a school day associated (usually Friday before the reenactment starts) you are welcome to attend and assist in showing the next generation our collective history.
Now on a final note we do not tolerate any form of racism or discrimination. People of all backgrounds, nationalities, and races participated in the Civil War for both sides. This is what we portray nothing more nothing less. All are welcome we have reenactor's from 12 to 70, men, women and children. Please come and join this great hobby and lets keep it alive and growing.
